Neurotic

When I am neurotic

Grooveshark

Check out Grooveshark

Finally, something that does not require me to download any songs and yet I can enjoy listening to my favourite music. Grooveshark! To my surprise, they have Chinese songs too and the 90s pop that I miss so much. Will use this to find the old classics.

Virality in games

Attended Accelerate 2010 today. There was a talk about baking successful viral loops in games.

Games here refers to mainly social games where the virality is provided when a user introduces another user into the game. Anyway one important point that I took away is the part that the best way to design incentives in games is to leveraging core human emotions.

And these emotions are demographics specific:

For guys: Fear, Greed, Anger and Lust works best (think “challenge a friend”, “Get something free”)
While for girls: Empathy, Friendship, Curiosity, and Reciprocity works better (think “lonely cow”, “Both you and your friend gets something for free!”)

Also depending on the region, in asia the “stealing” and “revenge stealing” feature works better than in the west.

It was not mentioned much in the talk, but I think the gist of virality in games is that if each of the user is compelled (willingly) to at least invite a friend into the game. that friend gets acquired, activated, retained and start referring the game to at least another friend. Yay the Viral Coefficient K is more than 1!!! And what will compel them to refer is “incentives” and the incentives will require game designers to milk the power of core human emotions.

Yep. Talk is easy. Implementing all these in the game design is the hard part.
